Our Scotland 03:00
A piper on Princes Street plays for the tourists who throw him their coins in reply His Robertson tartan's a proud battered remnant of a Scotland that's long since gone by Some day our wee country will again be a nation I belong to Scotland and in Scotland i'll bide I'll wait for that day with anticipation They've taken our freedom but they'll no' take our pride Well it's said that without the support of Great Britain our economy wouldn't be strong But we've yet to be given the chance we deserve to prove that that theory is wrong Some day our wee country will again be a nation I belong to Scotland and in Scotland i'll bide I'll wait for that day with anticipation They've taken our freedom but they'll no' take our pride So we're facing the future and like it or not there's decisions that have to be made To survive as a colony of a long fallen empire is something i would happily trade Some day our wee country will again be a nation I belong to Scotland and in Scotland i'll bide I'll wait for that day with anticipation They've taken our freedom but they'll no' take our pride

Yesterday I realised that no, not everything that shines is gold. Yesterday I saw in your face - no, It’s not even brass. Seems like a lie and maybe this is so, you were nevver as I imagined, but I tell you, you will lose more. Maybe you will try to change, but my face will not return to the smile of yesterday. Friendship is something you have to nurture, Especially when it seems that even truth can deceive you. No, it will never be the same. Maybe someday I’ll see you somewhere and remember something about you. Tomorrow I will forget we ever played together, passengers on the same boat. Never forget that your pride is worth nothing, It will drown you And no, it never will be the same. No, it will never be the same...!

Well we're sleeping our way right through the twenty first century And the more things change, the more they stay the same Charismatic politicians are accused of perjury And the more things change, the more they stay the same The councils are corrupt and the government as well And the more things change, the more they stay the same They'll get their just desserts in Heaven, or possibly in Hell And the more things change, the more they stay the same And the dole queue's getting longer as tensions start to rise Social problems piling up before our very eyes But you've got to grin and bear it 'cos you've got to play their game And the more things change, the more they stay the same People say that immigrants are stealing all our jobs And the more things change, the more they stay the same But the best solution they can find is to form an angry mob And the more things change, the more they stay the same The immigrant should not be blamed for this governmental mess And the more things change, the more they stay the same And as long as we hate each other, we never can progress And the more things change, the more they stay the same And the dole queue's getting longer as tensions start to rise Social problems piling up before our very eyes But you've got to grin and bear it 'cos you've got to play their game And the more things change, the more they stay the same We've got guns and we've got weapons and we'll use them if we must And the more things change, the more they stay the same To stamp out terrorism, in the USA we trust And the more things change, the more they stay the same Because we know who's right and wrong and we're perfectly justified And the more things change, the more they stay the same Who cares if a suspect's guilty, so long as we're sure he died? And the more things change, the more they stay the same And the death toll's getting higher as tensions start to rise Social problems piling up before our very eyes But you've got to grin and bear it 'cos you've got to play their game And the more things change, the more they stay the same

When i saw you in the morning, didn't know who you were Wanted to go with you but i didn't dare You were the one true thing that i could believe in You were the fly in my ointment, the ice in my glass I would have lifted the world for you When i saw you in the evening, rainbows in your hair Barefoot in the moonlight, and all i could do was stare Well i wanted to say that you've made my life worthwhile And i wanted to be there, just to see you smile

So many things that i want to say But it doesn't matter anyway 'cause time moves on and now i'm still here Living through another year You'd want me to live so that's what i'll do Living life for me, but remembering you The world still turns and the crops still grow Soon the sun will melt this snow You used to sing "Waes Hale" at the top of your lungs, Play the mandolin and sing in foreign tongues You weren't a saint but you tried to make people smile And when your moment came you showed no fear Because you tried to enjoy every day you were here You made it all worthwhile, Jimmy Carlyle and this time when i came to stay i held your hand as you passed away and when i was there in your house alone i still felt like it was your home I sat in your chair and put your records on But it wasn't the same because you had gone And though i accept that you have died There'll always be a part of you inside

about

These songs are mainly songs Jimmy and I recorded in Edinburgh in 2006 and 2007, meaning to put them on our next CD. This is that CD, it turns out.

Tracks 11, 13, 14 & 15 were recorded in 2009 by Anni at The Croft, and tracks 12 & 16 were recorded in 2004 in Kirkwall and they feature Dan Rhodes and Mike Holgate.

Track 17 is a song I wrote in on the 9th February 2010.

My thanks go out to everybody involved. The proceeds from the sale of this CD were donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.

This album is dedicated to the memory of Jimmy Carlyle, remembered with a smile.
